Experience Spring Like a Local

The days start to warm up and bluebird skies abound. Springtime in Summit County is more than just a season – it’s all about the experience. Skiers and snowboarders in funny costumes and even swimsuits shred some powder and lounge on slopeside decks during the snowiest and most relaxed time of the season. It’s like being on the beach, but instead of the heat, there’s crisp mountain air and toasty sun rays. This combination of deep snow, sunshine and fun events is unbeatable. Check out our list of favorite spring experiences in Summit County!

Head to The Beach

The Beach, Arapahoe Basin

The Early Riser parking lot at ABasin (as the locals call it) is home to the quintessential Summit County spring experience: The Beach. Bring your cooler, grill and refreshments and enjoy a slopeside meal while making turns on fresh snow. The place is popular and fills up fast, so reservations are a must. Each spot comes with a picnic table and parking for two vehicles.

Soak up the sun on a deck

Robbie’s Tavern at the Bergenhof, Breckenridge

What better way to go local than to check out the only locally owned and operated restaurant on the mountain? Right at the base of Peak 8, Robbie’s Tavern panoramic deck has become the new local’s spot to fill up on vitamin D and modern comfort food while you watch all the action on the mountain. But don’t let the word “local” intimidate you – there’s room for everyone! Offering the best view in town, the restaurant is open for breakfast on weekends, and for lunch, happy hour and dinner daily, and it has a great selection of craft beer and yummy cocktails. Ski season hours: Monday-Friday, from 11:00 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Try pond skimming

Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain

No spring experience on the mountains would be complete without pond skimming. A tradition to welcome the arrival of spring, it consists of attempting to ski across a small pond filled with very cold water. Silly costumes are highly recommended, and you can win prizes and giveaways for your pond-skimming skills, creative outfit, or for simply being there supporting the most adventurous.

Shake it with some tunes

Copper Mountain and Keystone

Another Summit County spring tradition, Copper Mountain hosts big acts during their end of the season bash Sunsation. Concerts are free, and in previous years had names such as Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Susan Tedeschi, Beastie Boys’ Mix Master Mike and Ozomatli. If you’re bringing your kiddos, head out to Keystone for a week-long musical celebration for the whole family.  Kidtopia Music Experience is a free event that features parades, fireworks, dance parties, family movie night and game time, meet and greet with avalanche rescue dogs and… have I mentioned ice cream party?
