January in Breckenridge Means Winter Events

January is almost here and besides the best snow conditions of the year so far it is also the beginning of winter events season. January host two of Breckenridge’s premiere events. Held each January Ullr Fest and the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships bookend the month.

Ullr Fest starts Sunday, January 11th and runs for about a week. The festival celebrates Ullr, the Norse god of winter and skiing. Ullr Fest is a crazy mix of different and sometimes irreverent events including the annual ice skating party, Ullympics, Talent show and more.

The highlight and centerpiece event of Ullr Fest is the Ullr Parade which is on Thursday, January 15th at 4:30 p.m. on Main Street. It’s free and it is a great place to see Breckenridge’s wild side. If you are 21 or older come at 4 p.m. and be a part of the world’s longest shot-ski. Click here for more information on Ullr fest

The rest of January is dedicated to the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships.  The Snow Sculpture Championships draw thousands to see teams from all over the world compete for snow sculpture bragging rights.

This international competition starts with 12 foot high, 20 ton blocks of highly compressed snow. The artists then use only hand tools to create intricate sculptures. The temporary works of art stay on display for a week after the event and finally removed. Although only around for a couple of weeks, these sculptures.

The Snow Sculpture Championships are spread over three weeks with the 2nd week being the most popular. The 1st week starts January 19thand is “Technical Week” and highlights how the blocks are made. The 2nd week is “Sculpting Week” from January 27th – 31st where the teams come in and create the art. The sculpture takes place from Tuesday to Saturday and the judging is on Saturday. The final week is “Viewing Week” where the sculptures remain up for people to enjoy. The sculptures are finally bulldozed on February 8th.
