Early Summer in Breckenridge

People rafting in ColoradoSpring is the wettest season of the year in Breckenridge. All of the spring snow Breckenridge is getting now (and it’s a ton!) is going to translate into a lush and beautiful early summer. Soon the Blue River will be bursting with fresh melt water on its way to feed the trees and flowers in the wilderness around Breckenridge. Early summer in Breckenridge is a time of awakening from the long winter and celebrating the rebirth of summer.

Summers in Breckenridge are best described as being “just right.” The weather is just right if you are looking for cool breezes and warm sunshine. Colorado is known for its sunny days and Breckenridge is no exception. Often there will not be a cloud in the skies for most of the day in the early summer. The temperatures are warm but much cooler than most of the rest of the country. The water from the snowmelt adds a lushness that is special to the early summer season. The rivers and streams are swollen, everything is a little greener, flowers grow faster giving the feeling that Breckenridge is “shaking off” the cold and snowy winter season.

The best part of the return of summer is the wide variety of activities and events that take place in Breckenridge and Summit County. Everybody knows that the winter in Breckenridge is a time for skiing and snowboarding but the secret of the Rocky Mountains is the summer. Besides the amazing weather there is a wide variety of activities to enjoy in the High Country. It is impossible to share all of the different activities there are in Breckenridge in one article but her are a few. Adventure activities first come to mind when thinking about Breckenridge and Summit County in the summer. Hiking and biking are the 2 mainstay activities and are enjoyed by many. Hiking is as easy as finding the right trail and putting one foot in front of the other. Biking is almost as easy. With hundreds of miles of paved an unpaved trails for all ability levels and bike rental shops all over the place biking is an inexpensive summer activity for all types of people.

In early summer Breckenridge celebrates the return of water. It is an especially good time for rafting and fishing. The snowmelt creates the best conditions on the various rivers that can be found all around Breckenridge. There are many rivers that have runs of all abilities and no lack of river outfitters to help get you down them. A popular easy stretch of river is the Upper Colorado. Class 2 rapids such as Eye of the Needle and Yarmony Rapids are exciting and easy to navigate for anyone. A more challenging river in the spring is the Arkansas. Brown’s Canyon and the Numbers offer hair-raising class 4 and 5 rapids that flow strong in the early summer. Early summer is also a great time to fish. Most of the rivers around Breckenridge are Gold Medal which means they are reserved for the biggest and best fish. There are also some really nice lakes including Dillon Reservoir, Officer’s Gulch and Trent pond in Silverthorne. If you want to try something a little different grab you gear but keep it light. Take a hike to Mohawk, Surprise, Boulder or Lilly Pad Lakes which are just a few high alpine lakes that are great fishing. The unspoiled water and amazing alpine views are worth the hike.

In mid June the Peak 8 Fun Park Opens. The Peak 8 Fun Park is a top attraction in Breckenridge. The original draw was and still is the alpine slides. Now add to the adrenaline rush with the Gold Runner Coaster and one can see why the Peak 8 Fun Park is so popular. Over the years the Fun Park has grown from the alpine slides to an amusement park with activities for kids. Click here for more information on the Peak 8 Fun Park.

When it comes to Breckenridge summer activities there really is too much to bring up in just one article. This is just a highlight of some of the summer activities that Breckenridge is best known for. One highly recommended activity is to just take a walk through town. Take in the sights, sounds and smells of Breckenridge’s Historic Main Street. Take a historic walking tour with or without a guide. Stop into a museum and learn a little more about Breckenridge’s rich history.

If you are thinking of visiting Breckenridge this summer one of the best weekends is Father’s Day Weekend. Father’s Day Weekend is generally the unofficial kickoff to the peak summer season. The Peak 8 Fun Park and the gondola both open for the summer and the weekend is anchored by Kingdom Days. Kingdom Days is a celebration of the town’s 153 year history and includes events and activities like the Outhouse Races, the annual Breckenridge Town Party, free admission to all historic sites and museums and more. Visit http://www.gobreck.com/ to learn more about Kingdom Days. Also Father’s Day Weekend just down the road in Frisco is the Annual BBQ Challenge.  This year is the 20th anniversary of the Frisco BBQ Challenge and there will be over 70 different BBQ choices, live music, pig races along with the usual assortment of characters and good times.

Just taking a look at this small sample of activities and events, not to mention the great weather it is easy to see why some people would call the early summer Breckenridge’s “secret season.”

Great Spring Skiing

Breckenridge Ski ResortWe were surprised by the great weather we had this last week of the ski season at Breckenriidge. We had a chance to sample spring skiing with the soft snow and easy turns… to winter skiing with 14 degree weather…. to fresh powder…. all with the longer days and hours of sunlight. We enjoyed our view of the mountain and the friendly service. It was truly a wonderful time.
